Viking-period silver ingot

This ingot is typical of the small silver ingots which produced during the Viking period.  Used as currency, they are often found in hoards together with silver coins, fragments of cut silver sheet or plate and silver arm-rings known as 'ring money'.  A cut fragment of 'ring money' was found during the recent excavations at Whithorn.   Silver ingot, D-shaped section with flattened or cut ends.  The surface is worn.  X-ray fluorescence (XRF) examination shows a very high silver content and well within the silver range of other Viking period ingots.
