Viking-period lead trough for processing cat pelts
This is one of the two large lead vessels from Whithorn.
They were found in association with a number of cat skulls and
bones which showed signs of skinning. Cat fur was a popular
edging on tunics and cloaks and these lead troughs were used for
the preparation (soaking and dyeing) of cat pelts.
Vessel or trough of lead sheet. Oval in shape, the sides
have been squashed and folded in - probably the result of
burial. The rim is turned and may have secured a wooden
hoop. There are a number of perforations round the rim.
