The Battle of Flamborough Head, an eye witness account of the battle of Flamborough Head by John Paul Jones's Midshipman Nathaniel Fanning of Conneticut (part a)

'It was at the port of L'Orient in northern France that I met the celebrated John Paul Jones.  He invited me aboard his ship Bon Homme Richard which he said was bound immediately for America and that I might go home in her if I chose, in the capacity of midshipman.  If only I had known of his smoothness of tongue and flattery to seamen then.  I too was flattered.  I was an exhanged prisoner of war you see, captured on an American privateer.'
