Gauging rod belonging to John Paul Jones

This dipping stick, or measuring rod is made from one long piece of bone. It is marked with a line at one inch intervals up to 32 inches along one edge. Two pieces of polished wood slide along the measure and one piece has a brass turn screw to fix it in position. It would have been used to measure the volume of liquid in barrels.   Ships carried stores of drinking water, wine and spirits in wooden barrels.
