Cream jug of polished basalt ware

This crockery came from the home of John Paul Jones (1747-1792) at 19 Rue de Tournon, Paris, where he lived in relative obscurity for the final years of his life. Basalt ware or "Egyptian Black" was first made commercially by English potteries in the 1760s.  It became very fashionable and large quantities of it were exported to North America.
