Italian octave spinet
Octave spinets were miniature harpsichords used in many private
homes in Italy to accompany singing.
The inside of the lid is painted with a scene depicting the
Judgement of Paris. In this Greek myth, three goddesses Hera,
Athena, and Aphrodite - here depicted on the left of the image -
claim the golden Apple of Discord for 'the most beautiful'. Zeus -
on the throne - does not wish to inspire anger and so chooses Paris
to select the most beautiful of the goddesses. In the painting, the
goddesses are accompanied by their guide, the winged god
Hermes.
