Communion flagons, Quarrelwood Congregation, Kirkmahoe, 1745

The congregation at Quarrelwood were Cameronians, supporters of Richard Cameron, a Covenanter killed by government troops in 1680.  Officially called the United Societies of the Suffering Remnant of the True Presbyterian Church in Scotland, they were known as McMillanites, after one of their early ministers, John McMillan.  The small congregation continued into the 1830s when it was absorbed into the Martyrs Church, Dumfries   One flagon is by James Wright of Edinburgh and the other is attributed to Stephen Maxwell of Glasgow.  While they are of contemporary date, they are not a pair.
