“An Elegy in Memory of that Valiant Champion, Sir R. Grierson, Late Laird of Lag, Who died Dec. 23d, 1733”

Robert Grierson (c1655 - 1733) was a local laird.  He was responsible for administering the law leading to the arrest and execution of many Covenanters. Because of this he was hated by their supporters and for generations afterwards.   Grierson was immortalised by Walter Scott as Sir Robert Redgauntlet in his book 'Redgauntlet'.   This book was collected by Dr Thomas Boyle Grierson for his museum in Thornhill.  Grierson may have bound this pamphlet as his signature appears on the front pastedown and he has written the title "Lag's Elegy" on the front cover.
