Spice tin

During the reign of Queen Victoria the trade in exotic spices expanded and more people used imported spices. Traditional British cuisine and British culinary habits also changed. Spice boxes, for keeping a variety of condiments, became standard items in most kitchens.   This is a late Victorian, large, circular spice tin. It is made from galvanised sheet steel, and inside it is split into six compartments with a taller compartment in the centre. It contains a sample of spices.
