Sampler made by Janet McGuffog, Cumloden School

Sampler made by Janet McGuffog, a pupil at Cumloden School, a nineteenth charity school in Minnigaff.   From the New Statistical Account of 1842, we know the Countess of Galloway had a charity school near Cumloden Cottage, where 25 girls were instructed in reading, writing, arithmetic, and needlework, by a female teacher.   It is sewn on brown even-weave material, using coloured threads, to depict the letters of the alphabet, numbers, various borders. It is done with cross-stitch, outline stitch, eyelets, etc., and is in a frame behind glass.
