Merit Certificate presented to Darvel Public School pupil Mary
Boyd by the Scotch Education Department for examinations in the
'Three Rs' - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic - as well as
Geography, British History, and Nature Knowledge.
In 1872, the Education (Scotland) Act set up a system of
schooling for all of Scotland, however the overall administration
of the Scotch (later Scottish) Education Department was situated in
London until 1939, when headquarters moved north.
