School sampler, 1861
Sampler made with multi-coloured wool with numbers and alphabet
by schoolgirl Janet Borland. Bottom half of sampler is stiched with
'C. Pollok, Teacher, New Educational, Mauchline, June 30th 1861',
and is bordered with flowers.
Samplers with alphabets, Bible verses, or educations motifs were
often made by young girls in school during the 18th and 19th
centuries to demonstrate knowledge and skill. Domestic subjects
were taught to young girls as a standard, with a gender divide
separating girls to home science, and boys to wood and
metalworking.
