School strap
A split-tailed tawse, more commonly referred to - ominously - as
'The Strap' or 'The Belt' was an implement used for corporal
punishment in schools in Scotland and the north of England; a cane
was normally used elsewhere in Britain. For many students, the
painful memory of being hit on the palms with the strap has stayed
with them well into adulthood. Corporal punishment was eventually
banned in state schools in the UK in 1986, and in Scottish private
schools as recently as 2000.
