Thomas Munroe - Death Mask

Death Masks, 1849-1868   Collected by Dr Thomas Grierson for his museum at Thornhill, these death masks represent the Victorian interest in physiognomy - attempting to discover a persons' character from their physical features.  On 13 March 1855, 18 year old Thomas Munroe was executed at Carlisle prison for the murder of Isaac Turner at Lamplugh during a robbery.
