Death Mask (1)

Death Masks, 1849-1868     Collected by Dr Thomas Grierson for his museum at Thornhill, these death masks represent the Victorian interest in physiognomy - attempting to discover a persons' character from their physical features.   This is the death mask of Robert Smith, a young labourer from Eaglesfield. Smith was hanged at Dumfries on the 12th of May, 1868 for the murder of eleven year old Thomsina Scott. This was the last public execution to take place in Scotland.
