Straw Helmet

These straw helmets were worn by Kilmarnock Burgh Police in the summertime. Being made from straw, they were cooler than normal helmets as they allowed the air to circulate around the head. It is said that when the people of Kilmarnock saw the helmets on the heads of the policemen each year they knew that summer had finally arrived. Originally in the collection of Strathclyde Police.
