Belt and Manacles
David Haggart escaped from prison by attacking Thomas Morrin the
jailer. This notice was printed later the same day and offers
a reward of 10 guineas. Thomas Morrin died of his
injuries and the reward for Haggart's capture was raised to 70
guineas. Haggart was eventually caught in Ireland and
returned to Dumfries in this belt and manacles in March 1821.
He was tried and convicted of the crime in Edinburgh and hanged
there on 18 July 1821.
