Postcard from Private Robert Orr
Postcard from Private Robert Orr, 6th Battalion,
Royal Scots Fusiliers, to his friend Robert Samson in Townhead
Street, Cumnock.
Robert Orr was born at Cumnock in 1887. He joined the army as a
volunteer in 1914. The 6th Battalion RSF was formed at
Ayr in August that year as part of Kitchener's 'First Hundred
Thousand' and was sent to France in May 1915. Later in the war
Robert Orr was awarded the Military Medal and attained the rank of
Company Sergeant Major. He was killed on 22nd March
1918, and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
