Identity Tags

Identity tags. From November 1916 a British solder carried two identity tags made of vulcanised asbestos fibre on a string round his neck. In the event of death the red disc remained with the body to aid identification. The lozenge shaped green/brown tag was removed for administration purposes. Previously only one disc had been issued and some men carried additional means of identification should the worst happen.
