Pocket compass used by Herbert Dunsmuir of the Highland Light
Infantry, who served throughout the First World War, mainly in
Mesopotamia. His brother, Freddie, also in the HLI, served on the
Western Front and in 1919 went to Russia with a Scottish force
drafted to support the White Russians in the civil war.
