Lord Stevenson (James) (1873-1926)

This painting was commissioned to celebrate Lord Stevenson's knighthood awarded in the New Years Hounours list in 1923 in recognition of his services as a director in the Ministry of Munitions during the First World War. He received a peerage and became Lord Stevenson, Baron of Holmbury for his part in organising the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 and 1925.   Lord Srevenson was brought up in Kilmarnock and before the First World War worked for Johnnie Walker Whisky where he became one of the Managing Directors.   A matching portrait of Lady Stevenson was painted at the same time and both were donated to the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock by Lady Stevenson in 1927.
