German Signal Pistol
Hebel Model 1894. Signal pistols like this were used by both sides in the war. In a time when communication by radio was in it's infancy, the easiest way to relay messages to entrenched troops was to fire a sequence of coloured flares as messages. They could also fire white flares which would illuminate parts of the battlefield.
