Stereoscope with Slide of Dean Castle

Stereoscopes were used to view stereoscopic photographs, the images of which appeared to be three-dimensional.   These types of photographs were very popular in the Victorian era. Often they featured European cities and site which were visited on grand tours at the end of the 19th century.   This photograph of Dean Castle prior to restoration is one of a number of stereoscopic photorgraphs of local scenes in the collection a the Baird Institute.
