Also called a pith or safari helmet, this hat comes from the uniform of Lieutenant-General Colin McKenzie (1806 - 1881). He was the son-in-law of Admiral John Douglas of Kinmount, near Annan, and saw military service in Afghanistan and India.   On 21st September 1855 Lieutenant General Colin Mackenzie was in command of the Southern Division of the Hyderabad Contingent in India, when he was attacked and left for dead. He survived and the blood stained uniform he was wearing at the time is now in the collection of Annan Museum!
