Royal Scots Belgic Shako, 1812 – 1815.

Hats of this type were worn at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 when an Anglo-Allied army commanded by the Duke of Wellington and a Prussian army commanded by Gebhard von Blücher defeated an Imperial French army commanded by the Emperor Napoleon.   Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo ended his rule and drew to a close 23 years of war across Europe and elsewhere. Napoleon was exiled to the island of St Helena, where he died in 1821.   This hat has been squashed at some point in its life and looks slightly odd in the photographs.
