Regency style top hat, 1780s.

Regency style top hat, 1780s. This hat is made of varnished linen.  It was found in the eaves of Drumburn Farmhouse, New Abbey, during reconstruction work. The early top hat was worn by women as well as men.  This style, sometimes slightly conical but other times straight-sided, remained popular until the 1820s, when it began slowly to evolve into the shorter top hat shape that we are more familiar with today.
