Miners Helmet & Lamp 1914

For centuries miners used oil lamps and candles to see underground, but if gas was present this could result in an explosion and a tragic loss of life. In 1890 carbide, which formed acetylene gas when mixed with water, was invented.  Although much less likely to cause an explosion, it emitted many times the light of a candle.
