Collapsible top Hat

Also known as a gibus or opera hat, this has springs inside which allow it to be folded flat for easy storage, for example in an opera house cloak-room.  The mid-to-late 19th century was a golden age of opera, dominated by Wagner in Germany and Verdi in Italy.
