English Backsword

The backsword has a hilt of simple construction with straight, usually counter-curved quillons, knuckle-bow and ring-guard on one or on both sides of the cross. Althought this particular sword is without any ring-guard at all. This sword has a heavy spherical  pommel, this is one of the charactertic features of late 16th or early 17th century swords made in England. This particular construction was not confined to backswords but will be found on rapiers and riding swords as well.
