Flute Player
Eleanor Robertson lived in Shanghai for several years
whilst her husband held a post with the Department of Public Health
there.
She spent much of her time there painting townscapes and
the local people. These were informal portraits made whilst
observing people at their work and daily business. This required
her to work quickly and watercolour was an ideal medium for
this.
Robertson was brought up in Ayrshire after her family moved
there from Northern Ireland for her father to take up the post of
Minister at Loudoun Parish Church. She went on to study at Glasgow
School of Art and has sometimes been described as one of the
'Glasgow Girls'.
