Dumfries Silver Collection
People have been making domestic items out of silver for
centuries. In troubled times wealth was used to buy silver because
it was easier to keep safe than other kinds of property. By the
time society became more settled in the mid 1700s, its use had
become a tradition. Every fashionable household would have at least
a teapot of fine quality silverware. In the eighteenth and early
nineteenth centuries a wealthy middle class developed, increasing
demand for domestic silverware. Scotland had distinctive tastes in
silverware, preferring strong, plain lines and little
ornamentation.
