Knitting sheaths

The knitting sheath helped support the weight of the garment on the needles - especially at a time when women frequently knitted whilst standing or walking.   The knitter wore a belt around her waist and the sheath was tucked into the right hand side at an angle.  The needle end was inserted into a hole or ridge at the top.   Knitting sheaths were often intricately carved and given as love tokens.
