Merino wool

A long sleeved jersey of Merino wool, size 42/107cm, manufactured by Cairnryan of Scotland, Stranraer.   The factory was opened in 1956 by William Slorance and Irving Elliot, former Lincoln Knitwear operators.  Twelve girls were employed, and by the end of 1956 they enlarged the building to provide space and a canteen for more girls.   The garments were sent to Barrhead for dyeing and returning for packing.  The business expanded to new premises in Stranraer and opened a warehouse shop in 1984.   However trade did decline in the later 1980s and Cairnryan Ltd shut in 1987.
