Circular crocheted mat

Circular crocheted mat made by the wife of Provost Banks who served Kilmarnock during the 1960s.   Crocketing is actually a relatively modern craft. The first substative evidence for the craft dates to the 19th century, when it was orignally practiced by Scottish peasants. However, post-WWII, crocheting became a popular home craft for anyone to enjoy.
