Swift and bobbin winder

Wool was purchased in hanks from the producer.  For use with a knitting machine it had to be wound onto bobbins - this was often the task of the children of the stocking knitter's household.   Although it often goes unrecorded the income of tradesmen was earned by their entire family, with women 'linking' or finishing the garments and children preparing the wool.
