Penkill Chair

This chair was once part of the furnishings at Penkill Castle, but in 1992 when Penkill castle was sold, it came into the collection at Dean Castle and now sits in the Banqueting Hall there. It was made for the marriage of Thomas Boyd of Penkill and Marion Mure of Rowallan, probably in Kilmarnock. The back rest is carved with the date 1628, the couple's initials and their combined coats of arms. On the left is the checkerboard of the Boyds and a spur showing Thomas's position within the family. On the right are the 3 stars of the Mures crossed with the wheatsheafs of the Comyns to represent Marion.
