Basket-Hilted Sword

The hilt on this sword is a classic example of the fully developed Highland basket-hilt with a dogfish skin grip, which is very rough and gives good purchase.  Although this sword dates to just before the 1745 Jacobite uprising and is of a type used in the rebellion, swords such as this are still carried by officers of Scottish regiments today.
