Bargany Scabbard and Sword
Decorated bronze sword scabbard containing an iron sword from
Bargany, Girvan, Ayrshire, 200 - 100 BC.
Only the scabbard is visible; the top of the sword is lost and
the rest is corroded within the scabbard. The tip of the scabbard
is decorated; its style has links to Irish scabbards, showing
connections between craft-workers at this time. It was found in a
peat bog, and had been bent before being deposited. This valuable
object was probably offered as a gift to the gods in what was seen
as a sacred place. On loan to the National Museums Scotland from
Fife Council Museums.
