Lead beads, Carghidown fort

Carghidown, Whithorn
Three lead beads found under the floor of a round house at the Carghidown promontory fort.  Lead objects are exceedingly rare in the Scottish Iron Age.  Analysis of these beads indicates that they could have been made from local lead ore.    Carghidown is a small fort - or perhaps a defended farmstead is a better description - on the coast near Whithorn.  Excavation in 2003-04 revealed two round houses protected by a large ditch and bank.
