Votive altar, Birrens
A small altar-shaped stone, with an inscription in irregular but
well-cut and clear lettering: FORTVNAE VOTVM. Made from pale
greyish sandstone and found at Birrens in 1886. From the
description this is a small altar to the God of Fortune. Plain with
a simple rectangular column, altars to Fortune or chance were
particularly popular gods with soldiers, as was victory.
