E A Hornel
E.A. Hornel came from an old Kirkcudbright family, studied art
in Edinburgh and Antwerp and then became a leading member of the
'Glasgow Boys' school of painting. He settled in
Kirkcudbright at the height of his fame, attracting other artists
and helping to establish the artistic reputation of the town.
He lived at Broughton House in Kirkcudbright from 1901 until his
death in 1933. He extended the property by adding a studio
and gallery to display his work to potential buyers. He
assembled an extensive library and manuscript collection covering
the life and works of Robert Burns and Dumfries and Galloway
regional history, together with an archaeological collection, much
of which can be found in the gardens of Broughton House.
He was an active member of Dumfries and Galloway Natural History
and Antiquarian Society, and Convenor of the Stewartry Museum
Association in Kirkcudbright for the last 7 years of his life.
