French violin
French violin with 2-piece back, inlaid with image of a
girl and a boy in a rural setting with a church in the background.
The violin is also carved in relief at the top of the back, and
features the carved head of a bearded man on top of its pegbox. The
violin is inscribed with 'honoratus derazay factor italiano modo
urbe mirecuria', which affirms that that maker was Honoré
Derazay and the violin was made in Mirecourt, northeastern France.
Honoré Derazey trained in Mirecourt before working for
various makers in Paris between 1830 and 1839. He
returned to Mirecourt around 1840 to establish his own
workshop.
