The Rood Fair, Dumfrries

By this time the Rood fair was more or less confined to the White sands and trading stalls had been almost entirely replaced by sideshows. Crowds still flocked to the Fair from all around Dumfries. Looking at this scene we can understand why Robert Burns, one hundred years earlier, used to go to the Fair to study the peoples' faces and listen to their chatter. Burns claimed that this was the best way for a writer to study human nature.
