Provost's Cane, Royal Burgh of Dumfries

It is inscribed "Proveist Dumfreis, A Loreburn, Ex Bono M Hairstains".   The Hairstains family owned the estate of Craigs on the outskirts of Dumfries.  The historian, Robert Edgar, records, "...one of the family gifted a Brazil staff with a silver head to the Provost of Dumfries, which each Provost receives at his admission".   The Royal Burgh of Dumfries ceased to exist when local government was reorganised into a two tier system of districts and regions in 1975.  In turn, this was replaced by unitary authorities in 1996.
