Table of Bridge Customs and Duties, 1854

This document records the prices to be paid for using the bridges across the River Nith in Dumfries, “from Portrack Ford to the Water mouth of Nith”.   It lists prices for everything from horses, cows and pigs to wool, oil, wine, fish, butter, cheese, cloth and clogs. It concludes “No custom is payable by the Family of Nithsdale.  The Double of all the said Customs is payable at the public Fairs of the Burgh.”
