Provost's chain of office, Royal Burgh of Dumfries Burgh

The Provost's chain of office is 15 carat gold, has an oval drop, embossed, with leaf and thistle surround. The figure of Saint Michael is on the obverse.  It was presented to Provost John Kerr in 1822 with a recommendation that the leading citizen of the town “wear the smaller part of the chain constantly, but to reserve the longer and heavier part with a medallion that is attached to it, for extraordinary occasions.”   Detail: "From the INHABITANTS of DUMFRIES to the PROVOST as A Badge of Office 1822"
