Ladies embroidered apron

This apron is typical of the style of the 1880s.  Aprons by this time were more functional unlike earlier fashions where they were worn as additional decoration to the indoor dress.   The apron is made of black cotton, embroidered with highly coloured threads to a pattern of strawberries, leaves and flowers, a design pre-printed onto the apron.  Machine made black lace is used as trim and the bib sports a further decoration of black cotton pleat.
