Invitation to Jessie Wilson from St James Palace

Invitation of attendance for Jessie Wilson from the Lord Chamberlain, to St James's Palace on Tuesday 5th November, 1935, from 11am to 6pm.   In October 1935 Jessie Wilson sent gloves to Drumlanrig Castle, a pair for Lady Alice Scott, sister of the Duke of Buccleuch, and a pair for the Duke of Gloucester who she was shortly to marry.   Both Jessie Wilson and her mother knitted Sanquhar gloves and socks for a living in the years after the First World War. In the 1920s they received 2/6 (12 1/2p) for making a pair of gloves with initials or a full name worked at the wrist. The person placing the order would supply the wool. When orders were scarce they knitted gloves with 'Sanquhar' at the wrist for general sale.
