Glove in the Duke pattern, "JH" at wrist

Example of a Sanquhar pattern glove in brown and cream wool to illustrate the "Duke" design. This refers to the Dukes of Queensberry and later, Buccleuch, landowners in the parish of Sanquhar and probably the only nobility known directly to its inhabitants. This pattern is the most ostentatious and `showy' of them all. It has variations known as `squares' which may be later inventions and include, Rose, Trellis, Drum and Cornet.  The glove has the initials "JH" knitted into the wristband.
