Stonemason's chisel (12)
Chisel type tool used by stonemason. It is lozenge shaped with a square profile tapering to a point at either end. Irregular grooves are incised along the centre of the two opposite sides.
Stone was worked using a range of tools including saws and chisels. Stone mason's tools have changed very little over the centuries. Finer shaping and detail was worked by striking chisels like this with a large wooden mallet.
